TEACHING VALUES IN THE PRIMARY CLASSROOM.

EFL teachers, especially those who teach young learners, know instinctively that they are expected to teach not just English but, among other things, they’re expected to teach values. However, one must recognise the controversial nature of the subject of moral education and the sensitivities it may engender, especially among parents and educators who could perceive moral education as a form of indoctrination.

In this session, I will discuss what values need to be taught and present a range of ideas and materials that can be implemented at primary level.

CLIL AND PROJECT BASED LEARNING IN YOUR CLASSROOM

As CLIL (Content and Language Integrated Learning) is becoming more and more widespread in the belief that students will significantly improve their foreign language proficiency while content learning is not negatively affected, it is important to take full advantage of the potentialities of the approach to improve the level of language proficiency in students. Implementation of CLIL prepares school students for studies at university on a qualitatively higher level, gives insight into ESP terminology, provides access to numerous information resources available on the Internet in English and allows both students and teachers to raise the quality of participation in international research projects.

In this session, I will briefly explore the principles behind CLIL, present ideas for CLIL- based projects for secondary school students and ideas for adaptations and further work.
